King Louis V, a dedicated botanist developed a botanical garden, arboretum, and small ménagerie near Petit Trianon to create new plants and experiments. The garden’s properties were neglected until Napoleon Bonaparte restored the floral site for his sister Pauline.

Marie-Antoinette's transformation of the Trianon gardens took place in two distinct phases. Starting in 1777, the English Gardens were created. Construction began in the summer of 1783 and was completed in 1786. The Queen's Hamlet, located on the eastern bank of the lake, is a unique blend of rural architectural influences, creating a cohesive aesthetic. Nestled 7 km northwest of Versailles, Marly emerges as a testament to Louis XIV's visionary pursuits. Positioned halfway between Versailles and the Palace of Saint Germain en Laye, Marly served as the king's cherished retreat, exclusively reserved for privileged courtiers. Here, the remarkable Jules Hardouin-Mansart unveiled his mastery as both architect and gardener, crafting one of the era's most distinctive creations. Although the palace of Marly succumbed to gradual demolition in the 19th century, remnants endure. The park endures, adorned with captivating features like the drinking pool and its two ponds, preserving the essence of this remarkable 17th-century masterpiece.

In the 17th century, theologians, notably Bossuet, promoted the concept of the divine right of kings, asserting that power and authority originated from a divine source. This idea upheld that the exercise of power was governed by the fundamental laws of the kingdom, including succession laws and the inalienability of the realm. These laws granted the sovereign complete control over the state and excluded women from inheriting the throne.
